The Shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary of Fátima reflects the request made by Our Lady of the Rosary, mentioned on August 13, 1917, and explicitly indicated in the apparition of October 13 of that year to Lúcia de Jesus, Francisco Marto, and Jacinta Marto: "I want you to have a chapel built here in my honor, for I am the Lady of the Rosary" (First Memoir of Sister Lúcia). The small chapel was erected in 1919 at the site of the 1917 apparitions in the Cova da Iria, and since then, the Sanctuary area has been developed in response to the significant influx of pilgrims.
The Shrine is a pilgrimage site that commemorates its founding event: the apparitions of Our Lady to the three shepherd children. Providing pastoral care to pilgrims is a primary element of its mission.
The Shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary of Fátima safeguards the message of the Fátima event. Its mission includes the study and dissemination of this message, which serves as a means of evangelization in Portugal and worldwide.
By express will of the Apostolic See, the Sanctuary of Fátima is designated as a National Sanctuary.
At the Shrine in Fátima, it is important to know the sites of the Apparitions— the Little Chapel, Loca do Cabeço, Poço do Arneiro, and Valinhos—; places of worship and prayer— BNSRF, BSST, Colonnade, Berlin Wall, Azinheira, Nativity Scene, Museum, Monument to the Sacred Heart of Jesus—; places of formation and pastoral care— Pastoral Center of Paul VI, Retreat House of Our Lady of Sorrows, Retreat House of Our Lady of Mount Carmel— and places of memory and culture— Sanctuary Museum, Temporary Exhibition, Aljustrel Museum House (currently closed); the homes of Saint Francisco and Saint Jacinta Marto, Sister Lúcia's House.
